The Helios 44-2 is a Soviet copy of the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm f/2, produced in enormous quantities from the late 1950s through the 1990s at the Jupiter optical plant in Valdai. Its distinctive swirly bokeh — caused by deliberate undercorrection of optical aberrations — has made it a cult favorite among portrait and creative photographers. Millions were produced as kit lenses for Zenit SLRs, making them abundant and inexpensive on the used market.
RetroCam recreates this look using real optical data: color temperature curves, aberration profiles, grain structure, and tonal response. The result is a live camera effect that feels authentic, not just a filter slapped on top.
Each effect is calibrated to match the real optical and chemical characteristics of the Helios 44-2 58mm.
