HISTORY

About the Tintype

Patented by Hamilton Smith in 1856, the tintype (or ferrotype) used a thin iron plate coated with collodion emulsion to create a direct positive image. Cheap, durable, and quick to produce, tintypes became the most democratic photographic medium of the 19th century — sold at fairs, by street photographers, and through the mail. Their characteristic warm brown-black tones and slightly rough texture remain instantly recognizable.

RetroCam recreates this look using real optical data: color temperature curves, aberration profiles, grain structure, and tonal response. The result is a live camera effect that feels authentic, not just a filter slapped on top.
